Change VHS to DVD

There are different ways to convert VHS to DVD. Perhaps the most common way is to buy a capture device (usually plugged into an available USB port) and connect the VCR using RCA cables. Press the play button on the VCR and capture (or record) on the capture device. Once the captured video files, you can easily fall into a DVD authoring program to create movies to share with family and friends. You can even upload videos to YouTube or Facebook to share with people even more than physical DVD can achieve!

Nice part about using computers is that you can create chapters, transitions, adding the words, titles, etc. as you wish. They offer a variety of fonts, styles and colors, you get more choices and can make a film class. There is much information online so it will take time to find and compare software.

A brief note on the kit is advertised as a conversion kit from VHS to DVD: be careful when buying them. Some of them are more expensive and does not work as advertised. Do your research on Amazon, or Google search “opinions”. Stick to well-known brands with good reviews, if you follow this route, although often less expensive and almost as easy to buy 30-40 dollar a single capture and use free software such as Windows Movie Maker or iMovie create your movie.

Another option is to buy a transfer machine which is a combination of the author and VCR. It’s much more expensive than buying equipment for the computer. They can be connected to the TV, make sure that the correct attribution so you can see what you copy. A cassette is inserted on one side and a DVD on the other side. However the film is long is the time it takes to copy. This device works well if you have lots of VHS tapes and do not want to deal with complexity, including computers in the process can be introduced. It is easy to use and generally well documented just read the instruction manual and you should be good to go.

You can also use a professional service where you can just drop a big box you broadband and they will return to you a big box of DVDs. This cost the most, but the best way to do it.

Time is running out! VHS tapes lose from time to time and become completely unwatchable. The first signs are often very dark picture, if you want to make changes quickly!
